Delhi Plans Hostels for 10,000 Students, Focuses on Safety and Affordability

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has reiterated plans for hostels for 10,000 students. With a PPP model under consideration and several institutions identified, key questions remain over costs, fees, safety standards and completion timelines.

The Delhi government has reiterated its plan to provide hostel accommodation for 10,000 students enrolled in colleges and universities across the national capital, with Chief Minister Rekha Gupta outlining a proposal aimed at improving access to safe, affordable and comfortable housing for students pursuing higher education.

The latest update was shared by the Chief Minister's Office on October 25, highlighting the administration's intention to strengthen student accommodation and educational infrastructure in Delhi.

Delhi Plans Hostels for 10,000 Students

Delhi attracts a large number of students from across the country each year for higher education, but many face difficulties finding safe and affordable accommodation near their educational institutions. The government has said the proposed hostels are intended to help students concentrate on their studies without having to worry about accommodation, food or personal safety.

The initiative will cover students enrolled in institutions across Delhi and will not be limited to those studying at government-run colleges and universities.

Both male and female students will be eligible for accommodation. According to the government, suitable locations are being identified, while colleges with sufficient space for hostel construction will be surveyed in the coming period.

Government Considers Public-Private Partnership Model

To speed up construction and ensure effective maintenance, the Delhi administration is considering a public-private partnership (PPP) model for building and managing the proposed hostels.

A draft policy on student accommodation is also being prepared. The policy is expected to establish the framework for developing and operating the facilities.

The proposal has gained attention amid concerns over student housing availability and safety following the building collapse in Satya Niketan in September, which claimed seven lives, including those of five students. Following the incident, the government began examining the shortage of student accommodation and the safety standards of existing housing in the capital.

The proposed hostel network is being positioned as a measure to address both the availability of accommodation and concerns about student safety.

Several Institutions Identified for Hostel Development

Hostel construction is already underway or has been proposed at several institutions, including Ambedkar University at Dhirpur, G.B. Pant Engineering College and Polytechnic, Indira Gandhi Hospital and Medical College, and Delhi Sports University.

The government has indicated that additional sites will be identified after assessing colleges and other institutions with available land for construction.

However, the administration has not yet announced a completion timeline, the estimated cost of the project or the fee structure students would be required to pay.

The proposed accommodation could ease housing pressures for thousands of students if implemented effectively. Its impact will depend on the development of suitable sites, the implementation of safety standards and the affordability of the facilities for students from different backgrounds.

For now, the Delhi government's renewed commitment signals its intention to address student housing concerns, while key details regarding costs, fees and completion timelines remain pending.
